How to Get Free Publicity for Your Jewelry

I know many of you market your jewelry offline in your local
community. Here are some free and almost free ways to
get the word out about your jewelry:

1. Carry your business cards with you EVERYWHERE you go.
Leave them in as many places as you can. When you go
out to eat, leave one on the table. Give one to your bank
teller, your tailor, and the clerks in all the stores you visit.
This should become second nature to you. Believe me,
over time it will make a difference. Oh, and be sure to have
your email and web address prominently displayed on your
card.

2. Wear some of your most interesting pieces of jewelry
when you go out. Try to dress in simple, monochromatic
colors to show off your pieces. When someone compliments
your necklace or earrings, hand them a business card.

3. Post flyers with photos of your jewelry and your contact
information on library bulletin boards, school & university
bulletin boards, grocery store boards, and any other relevant
bulletin board you can find. Again, make sure your website
address and email are prominently displayed.

4. Join the Chamber of Commerce, the Arts Council, your local
bead society and any other relevant organizations. Attend their
meetings with your business card and network.

5. If you don't have a bead or jewelry making group in your area,
consider starting one. You can buy your supplies in larger
quantities if you buy as a group, plus you can sponsor your
own group jewelry shows.

6. Send press releases to local newspapers and other relevant
publications. For more information on how and why to write a press
release:

7. Offer your friends and family an incentive such as free jewelry
for every customer they refer to you. Consider having a home jewelry
party to recruit others to market your jewelry.

8. Co-market with a crafter who produces a line of craft that compliments
yours such as purses, scarves, clothing etc.

9. Donate an item to a charitable organization for auction or raffle.
Not only will your jewelry get lots of exposure, you'll also get a tax
write off.

10 Consider writing articles both off line and online discussing
jewelry trends, ways to coordinate jewelry with the current
fashions etc. Include a brief blurb about your jewelry line and
a link to your website at the end of the article.

11. Have a big email book prominently displayed at shows. Collect
email addresses and email your customers with periodic updates
about your jewelry line as well as useful information such as
how to prevent tarnish on sterling silver etc.

12. Get listed in any relevant guides and directories in your area.

13. Enter jewelry and craft design contests. I had a friend who won
a contest sponsored by Michael's Craft Store. It generated a
ton of interest in her jewelry line.

14. Offer to teach others the craft of jewelry making. Not only can
this lead to positive publicity, but it can also be an additional
source of income.

15. Always look for new ways to get the word out about your business!
